Question : Problem: no explorer - so no window environment on xp box. anyone seen this one?

have a desktop, xp sp2, current on patches, got a call today that she had no taskbar... remoted in, and found she has no icons, no toobars... weird. i can log on, i can get task manager, did a quick scan of the tasks, and no explorer (as expected). when i try to launch such programs as msconfig or explorer, i get a "no program associated" error. reboots in both normal and safe mode result the same. looking at the file system, the programs are there, and appear not to have been changed. the box is on norton corporate av, and defn's are current, with boot scans and weekly fulls. currently have a person on site doing a backup of the pst file, since i have the feeling i will be rebuilding this box. anyone seen/heard of this one before? got an idea on how to get this running non-destructively? this box is about six months old...
