Question : Problem: Selecting default computer on a per workstation basis (instead of roaming profile messing it up)
|

Dear Experts,
In this windows 2003 network, I have alot of users...with roaming profiles.
They sometimes work on different computers. When they select a printer as default on one computer, it sometimes messes up their default printer on another computer. How can I make it so that printer settings are controlled PER workstation instead of by the user's profile. ie. default printer being selected based on the computername.
This is in an existing organization with alot of workstations. The printers are installed. I don't want anything that we'll have to pay for or which requires alot of major changes to our setup unless absolutely unavoidable.
hope someone has an easy solution :)

Printer settings should travel from user to user with the profile, one users default should not affect the another users default.
The problem you are having usualy happens when you have the printers installed as local printers (not network printers) as these will be viewable to all users, and any changes one user makes will affect other users. You can lock down the changes a user can make with a combination of permissions and group policies.
Alternativly delete all the local printers on the workstations and have the users map to the printers they need (map to a printer by going to start run and typing \\printserver\printer this will assing that printer to the user profile and they will have it with the same settings anywhere they go). You can also use login scripts to map printers. http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Windows_Server_2003/Q_20943033.html see accepted solution at the end.
