Question : Problem: 17-inch iMac fan runs really fast and then! goes to sleep

I have a 17 inch g5 iMac and I love it, but it is now starting to have some trouble the fan runs really fast and then! goes to sleep, so I got a Hardware Monitor and found that the CPU temp runs about 150 F and the HD runs around 90 F at the desk top but when you open anything it really shoots up 180 F or more and when it gets to 186.7 it goes to sleep I can wake it up but not for long, I tried looking on the net but could not find anything on it I could find things about the 20 inch but not the 17

got any thing that could help?

Answer : Problem: 17-inch iMac fan runs really fast and then! goes to sleep

Hi Rob,

The temperature sounds a bit high, but I only have the reference temperature for Intel iMac (http://www.intelmactemp.com/list?v_model=13&v_cpufreq=&v_memory=&v_hddsize=&v_hddrpm=&v_serial=&v_macosxver=&v_ambient_1=&v_ambient_2=&v_idleoem_1=&v_idleoem_2=&v_loadoem_1=&v_loadoem_2=&v_hddtemp_1=&v_hddtemp_2=&v_whine=&v_moo=&v_postedby=).  You should check your iMac if they are under the bad batch of capacitor (ref: http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/).  If they are not under the repair extension, but you have AppleCare, take it to a service centre.
