Question : Problem: Short range wireless distance measurement

Hello,
Does the technology exist to wirelessly measure the distance between 2 objects which are never more than 7ft apart? I have learned about infrared and sonar applications but they will not work as 1 of my objects will be moving in 3 dimensions and will exit the range of the sensor. The objects are very slow moving.
