A Storage Server is essentially a NAS (network attached storage) just by a different name.  A Server with a large amount of disks installed in it (100s of Gigabytes to several terabytes).

A storage server tends to be more limited in its functionality (only data access and storage) than a standard server (which can run database applications, business software, etc).
