Question : Problem: Needed 128Gb barrier resolve for hitachi 180gb(IBM) Hard disk

Hi

I've got a hitachi 180GXP 180GB hardrive that will not recognise above 128GB in win2k(SP3) .  I'm runnning the disk off an Abit KR7A-RAID board but have also tried the disk on other Boards all to no avail.  I've tried updating the bios to the latest version but that didbn't help either.

i know this is a simular question to this thread

The soloution to that problem may not work as it's hitachi any ideas?

Duronal.

Answer : Problem: Needed 128Gb barrier resolve for hitachi 180gb(IBM) Hard disk

Duronal,

More than likely it is W2K.  I just went through the same thing with several 160 GB drives.  Check out this app note from Microsoft

It turns out that while SP3 provides 48 bit LBA support, you have to make a registry setting that is NOT automatically done by applying SP3.  If you do not make this registry setting, and you go beyond the barrier limit, you will lose all of your data.  I know because this unfortunately happend with one of the drives.

Make the EnableBigLba registry setting and set it to 1 to enable it.  You should be able to see the entire capactity of the drive then.
