Question : Problem: Backup Exec-Upgrade or Fresh Install?
|
|
We are installing a new external 200/400 tape drive (replacing two internal 36/72 drives) The two windows 2003 servers have Backup Exec 10 (not 10d), one is a Exchange server and the other one is our Database server (pervasive not SQL) We have purchased 11d with the Exchange mod. My Question is should I uninstall both BE 10 and install a fresh 11d on one server? If yes, would it be better to put it on the Exchange Server or Database server? Or, should I just upgrade one server to 11d and not use the other?? (would there be an issue with the agents)
Both servers backup at night and are not heavy used at this time. Anyone have any suggestion on this??

The Exchange server may benefit the most from the new BE11d version. 11d now has the "granular restore" technology which allows you to only make a backup of the Information Store, but still gives you the possibility to restore individual mail messages from that IS backup. One warning - if you back up to tape, this "granular restore" feature does require sufficient free disk space to be able to restore the full information store to a temporary location on disk.
Make sure to install the latest 7170 build of BE11 - not the first build as that contained several bugs.
You will need a remote agent license to back up the second server from this BE11 install.
If you're starting with new tape technology, there may not be a lot of reasons to keep your old config and the best option may as well be to uninstall BE10, make sure the BE folder is really removed, reboot and install BE11 to start fresh. But, should you want to an upgrade that should work fine too.
