Question : Problem: Trash window opens and then closes immediately

I cannot access the contents of my trash folder. When I click the trash icon in the dock, the window flashes open momentarily and then closes before I can do anything. I had this problem on another folder but found that I could open it okay my viewing it as columns rather than as a list. Now I have backed it up to a CD, it still has this problem. I don't seem to be able to get to the trash folder at all and change it to list view.

I'm running OS X 10.4.11 on an iMac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

You don't have file vault enabled do you? http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031222122301840 This thread describes recreating a trash folder in Panther but overall this does sound like file system corruption. The best utility for this would be Disk Warrior 4. Boot from it and rebuild the entire volume.
