Has anyone who's well versed in SMS and MOM tried the new Systems Center pairing and have any feedback? Should I go with the new and forget about the tried and true?

SC essentials is not a good release.... stick with full versions (ie SCCM and SCOM) and put in a bit of effort to learn them - and you will find they are very powerful tools.
