Question : Problem: how can i connect my laptop ethernet port to an RJ45 (female) DB9 adapter to the console port of a switch.

my laptop does not have a DB9 port, and i know i can buy a dongle that can do the trick.  but i would like to buypass that and use the RJ45 - DB9 adapters that i have to connect to the console port of the switches.  i have tried a straight through cable and a crossover cable and nothing seems to work. i have also tried hyperterminal and secure crt.

Exactly, most switches manufactures have either a DB9 or RJ45 console port. In many cases, most require a rollover cable. Below are some very common types connections.
