Question : Problem: HP Color Laserjet 4500 - Keeps getting Error 49 - Cycle Power.

This printer keeps getting the Cycle Power error message (About once a day). Every time I turn it off and then on again, it works fine. It has 96 MB memory. It is an older printer, and it is used frequently. It seems to happen most when we send multiple print jobs. Any ideas?

Answer : Problem: HP Color Laserjet 4500 - Keeps getting Error 49 - Cycle Power.

From the HP website

Description

A communication error occurred. This error occurs when the printer's processor receives a command or data that it does not understand, which causes the processor to stop. These errors cannot be resolved unless the issue can be pinpointed and replicated.

Action
To clear the error, turn off the printer, and turn on the printer. If this does not solve the problem, perform the following actions as needed:
Cancel the current print job from the computer or server, then resend the print job. If this does not work, try sending a different job.
If the computer is connected to the printer through a parallel cable, verify that the cable is connected correctly and is of good quality.
If the problem persists, call HP Support.

Perform the following steps
Turn the printer off, and restart it. If the 49 error clears, proceed to number 9.
If the 49 error returns, turn the power off, unplug the power cable, disconnect all network cables, and remove the HP Jetdirect card (or any third party devices) if installed.
Wait at least 30 seconds before plugging the printer in directly to the wall. Do not plug the printer into a power strip or a surge protector.
Turn the printer on. If the 49 error returns, turn the power off, and unplug the printer. Remove the formatter, and check that the parallel I/O board is firmly installed on the formatter board.

Check for any non-HP memory DIMMs. (If any extra memory is installed, remove it.)

NOTE: EDO RAM memory is not supported on the HP Color LaserJet 4500 printer and may generate a 49 error if installed.

Reinstall formatter board.
Reconnect the power cord, and turn the power on.
If the 49 error returns, perform a cold reset (If 49 error returns, contact HP).
NOTE: To perform a cold reset, turn the printer off, and hold down the GO button while turning the printer back on. Remember to remove the HP Jetdirect card (if installed) before performing a cold reset.
If the 49 error clears, turn the printer off, reinstall all items removed earlier, and turn printer on. If the error returns, try to isolate the part that is causing the error.
If no 49 error occurs at power up, print a configuration page. If there is still no error, try printing from the PC.
Print through a parallel port if printing from a network.
Check that the printer properties are set to ECP port if printing through a parallel port. Try turning off the HighSpeed and AdvancedFunctions in I/O menu if printing through a parallel port (the I/O menu is accessed through the printer's control panel).
Rescan all scanned images that generated a 49 error, and try printing again. Change the format of the image to either a JPEG file with a lower resolution, or change the image to a different file type such as TIFF or bitmap. Moving the scanned image to the left, right, up, or down the page, then resaving the image can help also. Cutting and pasting the document into a new document can help as well.
Check the file size by performing a print to file procedure to verify the size of the file spooling to the printer. Lowering the file size can help reduce 49 errors. Performing a print to file verifies the size.
Print a driver test page to prove proper connectivity between the driver and the printer.
Print a small test page from various applications such as Word Pad to prove that specific software applications are functioning properly with the printer.
Add graphics to the Word Pad document, and print again.
Create a new document if the 49 error was generated in a specific software application. Use the PCL and PS driver
