Question : Problem: Can I use ethernet fiber with a SAN?

I recently had a shortage of fiber channel cable to connect HBAs to my fabric switch.  I assumed that fiber is fiber and used a fiberoptic network cable to connect a new server into my switched fabric.  I'm having trouble with speed and latency on this new server and I need to rule out the cable.  Can anyone tell me if fiber cable for network backbones is incompatable with fiber channel?  My switch is 2gbps.

Most likely the cables are identical. There are two types of fibre optics - long wave/single mode and short wave/multi-mode. The multimode cables have a larger diameter and are suitable for runs up to 500m. Single mode fibre, however, is suitable for runs of 10's of Km, and it's the laser that will blind you if you're silly enough to stare down the cable.

Almost all datacentre stuff  - both FC and ethernet is multimode and are completely interchangeable.
