In my experience, if the drive doesn't come up with the adapter >90% of the time it's a bad drive.

However, SATA to USB with Vista can be shaky, so I agree that you should try VistaPE in the original system.

Hold onto the Sabrent adapter - it's a useful tool for the little amount of money.
