Question : Problem: KeyBoard and Mouse stop working?

what the heck, this is wierd. on a windows 2000 Pro machine (P4 1800 mhz 512mb of ram) every once in a while for no apparent reason the keyboard and mouse will just stop working. the mouse is a usb mouse and the keyboard is plugged in using the ps/2 port. this is a wierd and inconsistent problem.
Has anyone else expierenced this or a similar issue or have any ideas on how to trouble shoot or correct this problem?
note I have changed the mouse but it did not help. I suspect the computer vs a problem with the mouse or keyboard themselves
