NetApp snapshots are VOLUME LEVEL ONLY. From a NetApp snapshot, you can restore single files (although this varies based on the implmentation).
You WANT volume level snapshots. It allows you to stagger your backups and shortens your restore times, improves performance, etc. And when you get into application data such as SQL and Exchange, you'll use different snapshot and backup methods that don't work well together.
