Question : Problem: iPod Corrupted

Hi, I have an 80gb ipod. Recently it got corrupted. I restored it with itunes (2 times already) but it still comes out as corrupted. I noticed something weird, since the ipod interface works when its not connected to the computer it says it only has 12 gb free, and its supposed to be empty since I just restored it.
Another thing, windows asks me if I want to format it, I'm thinking about doing this, but will the ipod work afterwards, I mean does the firmware gets removed???
