Question : Problem: Windows PC changes resolution when Sony 46" HDMI TV turned off

Hi,
I have a Dell Optiplex GX620 with the DVI add in board connected to onboard intel 82954G graphics chipset.

The PC is connected to a Sony 46" Bravia HDTV model 46W2000 by a high quality HDMI cable (belkin) and DVI>HDMI adaptor (also belkin). This is the only monitor.

I can successfully set the resolution to 1920x1080 50hz and if I set the TV to 'full pixel' display, it correctly displays the desktop and shows it is operating in 1080p mode.

My problem is that every time I switch off the TV, or switch the input to another source, the next time I turn the TV on or switch input back to PC, windows' resolution is changed back to 640x480.

If I then manually change the resolution back to 1920x1080, then it is fine until the next time I turn off the TV.

Can anyone tell me how to stop this happening?

Thanks,
Oli.

Answer : Problem: Windows PC changes resolution when Sony 46" HDMI TV turned off

I think i fixed it.

Even though I had downloaded the latest video driver on the dell website for the intel 82945g chipset, there was a newer driver at intel.com. at first it wouldn't let me install it becauase it said something like it was not approved by my systems integrator, but i extracted the files from the archive and after uninstalling the old drivers and utility,  I manually installed the new driver using the 'have disk' method.

This seems to  have solved the problem. It has also greyed out the 'hide modes this monitor cannot display' I can only assume that this was a known problem and this is how intel have fixed it. It also now detects the TV as 'Digital TV' instead of 'DIgital DIsplay' so I can only assume this driver has been tweeked to work properly with big tellys.
