I really need to scan an important document right away.

This seems to be a problem with the drivers for your device. I am not sure what operating system you are using, but if you are Windows XP please go to this link(otherwise please provide your operating system in a response): http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=sj-13026-3&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=73488&os=228&lang=en

Select "Download Only" and place the file on your desktop.

Go to the desktop and double-click the file you downloaded. Run through the install process. Once completed (and possibly a restart if needed) try doing your scan again.
