Question : Problem: Ultra3 SCSI 18.2 GB REPLACEMENT ON Compaq proliant ML570

Hi! there,

I need a consultation I have a compaq proliant ML570 server and we are also using Smart array controller with Ultra3 SCSI 18.2 GB hard drive. I would like to replace the hard drive because I am getting a red color led on the drive. Can I pull out the drive with out shutting it down. and whats the procedure to plug in a new hard drive into the compaq storage.

If you have a smart array controller and the system is setup as a RAID 5, you can just pull the drive when it is active and replace it. The system will begin rebuilding automatically.

You can use the Compaq Array Configuration utility to determine the RAID setting. If you don't have this utility, I strongly suggest you install the latest Compaq windows support. You don't mention your O/S, but here is a link to Windows 2000:

Additionally, if you decide to bring the system down, it will rebuild quicker using the BIOS utilities.
