Question : Problem: Should I use Windows Storage Server or just stick with Server 2003?
|

Hey Guys,
I'm buying a new file server because I'm just running out of room on all my current ones. The company selling me the 4TB server is really pushing hard for me to just leave the license of Windows Storage Server R2 Workgroup that comes with it on there. As I'll be pulling to servers offline after I get this I do have licenses of Server 2003 R2. Is Storage Server better? Will it work o.k. with my domain?

Windows Storage Server can join a domain. It also has a few extra features, including Single Instance Storage - which means that if user A has a document and user B has the same document, only one copy of the file exists - until and unless one of the users changes the document. This reduces overall space being used and should be transparent to the user. Standard server does not have this. Further Storage Server is not available except from OEMs at the time of purchase, so I would recommend you get it (also, there's no CAL requirement for accessing a Storage Server device).
