Question : Problem: how to turn off Solaris without screen safely?
|
|
Hi, the sun monitor cannot come up today. I plan to turn down the system. My problem is how I can turn off the computer if I cannot see the display in monitor. The operating system is Solaris. Can I just push the on/off button in the computer? Or is there any other safe methods to turn it down? Thanks.

for all new (relatively) computers there is a hardware deffault : if you press the on/off button for 4-5 seconds, the computer will shut down. it is a drastic measure, but it is MUCH better then pressin the reboot button. the reboot button causes a power surge, and thus enabling a spike of power to reach the cpu. if you turn the computer competely off, this wont happen, and the cpu will certainly be fine.
more to the point - when you turn the computer on - do you hear any beeps? it is possible that the screen's power cable is defaulted, and it is also posible the the cable is defaulted.
maybe one of the pins had broken off or twisted inside, thus disabling contact for certain information.
its also possible that the video card has "left" its slot, and simply needs a nudge back to its place.
get back to us after you turn the power down...
good luck
