Question : Problem: Detect display not working

I have a 2.33 Ghz Duo MacBook Pro. I use an external display most of the time at my desk without any problems (mirroring available, dual displays, etc). However, when I undock my display, the system continues to think that the external display exists. Nothing I do (detect displays, resetting resolution on 'external' display, mirroring/unmirroring) will stop it except rebooting. Anyone else run across this?
