Where abouts on the laptop does it draw the air in and where does it blow it out?

Answer : Problem: Where are the cooling fan intakes/outakes on a Macbook 13"

Here is a picture of the inside, the blue shows the intake areas and the red is the fan output. The smaller areas you identify are actually where the speakers are located.
If the lid is closed there should be ample space for air to get through, Just look at the gap when the lid is closed. Also most laptops will go into a hibernation or standby mode and reduce power usage thereby reducing heat when the lid is closed.
