Question : Problem: Having difficulties installing Epson twain driver for scanner.

I have been trying to install the Epson AL-CX11N scanner to no avail. WinXP is rejecting my install saying "Could not copy files. Check the setup disc, then run setup again. c:\ . . . . . \system.ini". Once I click OK, it then gives me the error, "AN ERROR OCCURRED DURING SETUP. RESTART YOUR COMPUTER, THEN RUN SETUP AGAIN."

My scanner is networked, but I am 99% certain that fact has nothing to do with why the scanner installer has an error every time I attempt to run it.

Pertinent facts: I have already had this printer/scanner/fax installed on this system, and it functioned perfectly (scanner included) for approx 8 months. I had a problem printing, and hastily uninstalled the Epson software. Upon reinstall, the software sees my printer on the network (with an associated IP address handed out by my router), and successfully installs the printer portion. However, the Scanner part comes up with an error. I am using the installation CD, but I have also downloaded just the scanner setup files from Epson. I get the same error whether installing from CD or from the files on my desktop. My initial thought is that somehow my old TWAIN driver is still in the OS or in the Registry, and the new install can't continue because it can't overwrite the old one. There are no scanners shown in the scanners/imaging devices, and a search for .TWAIN (with hidden and system files included) yields no results.

What am I doing wrong? Anyone know of a quick program I can run to quickly remove all traces of previous twain devices from the OS? Should I attempt to clean the registry?

A search on GOOGLE found a guy with a similar problem, but no true solution: http://help.lockergnome.com/windows/Epson-4490-scanner-ftopict584015.html

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Answer : Problem: Having difficulties installing Epson twain driver for scanner.

Ok, I think I found the fix. I didn't get a whole ton of help from Experts-exchange, but at least the next guy with this problem will find this solution from Google. It has been a painful week - I rely heavily on my scanner!

The solution was simple. The setup.ini file shown as an error was not located in my install directory. In other words, when I unpacked the Twain driver install software to a temporary folder on my desktop, a new "setup.ini" file was created. When running Epson's "setup.exe", it returned an error saying "Could not copy files . . . . setup.ini".  I made the mistake of thinking that setup.ini was the new version. It was not. Instead, I found the referenced ini file by typing exactly what the location of the error said into an explorer window. In my case, I pasted this exact location: "C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\\" into explorer and hit enter. A folder with over 1,000 random files opened. In this folder was the "setup.ini" file that has been a problem child for me the entire time. I simply right-clicked it, clicked properties, and UNCHECKED the box for Read Only. I did a small dance, then ran the Twain setup exe file again. Problem solved. Keep in mind I've emailed Epson customer support twice with a detailed description of my error TWICE, and the only reply I've seen either time was the automated reply saying they got my question. Not sure why this tiny fix is such an issue for them to figure out, but it would be nice if they could resolve it for the many of us who have this problem.

Now it's back to work!
