Question : Problem: Should a Motherboard power fans without Power Switch
I recently purchased a replacement FIC Socket A motherboard from an on-line vendor. I was installing the board into an E-machine case that at one time had run the same type FIC board. It was now running another slower MB/CPU with no problems. I wanted re-utilize a faster AMD Athalon in the case with the FIC . After installing the CPU on the FIC MB and hooking up all of the wiring I plugged the power cord into the power supply. When I did, and without touching the power switch, the CPU and Case fans both powered up but I could not hear anything on the drives, nor did the system post, boot or display anything on the screen. Holding the power supply button in for 10 or 15 sec did not seems to have any effect. I disconnected the power switch and again plugged the power cord in and the same thing happened. This happened with all components installed and with everything (memory, CPU, drives, etc) removed.
When I contacted the on-line vendors "Tech" he informed me that a motherboard powering up without touching the switch is is a "normal" thing to happen when installing a board for the first time. By holding the switch in it should have shut the machine down and then operated normally.
I have replaced boards before and have never had a board power up and remain on by just plugging in the power cord. The power supply and switch worked perfectly with the board I had removed. Can anyone tell me if his is a true statement?
