No. First of all: I Assume it is an Acer or HP laptop. It could however happen to all of them.
Now: what goes wrong is this:
There are 2 flatcables running from the computer to the screen.
The cable running from the computer up to the top of the screen has a bad contact. With some laptops you can easy see the problem: The plastic on top of the screen: try to slightly push (squeeze) the plactic from left to right (no rough squeezing!). On a specific point the screen comes up. It is there there is a contact failure.
This happens frequently. I use to "fix" this by removing the plastic from the screen, and put some folded plastic on top of the screen. Reassembling, there is a slight pressure on the contact points, and it works for a long time.
It could be fixed "better", but then you need to return the laptop to the reseller, and chances are high they just replace the screen.
