Question : Problem: xp not displaying usb devices

Hi guys,
just a quick one.
I've just built a new computer using an asus m2npv-mx mobo.
windows xp was installed without a hitch
all drivers etc are installed.

omly problem is xp does not display any usb devices i plug in.
I've tried a 80gig HD and a 2gig thumb drive.
windows gives me the "bing-bong" sound to tell me something has been plugged in, but does not display it in "my computer"
i equally get the "bing-bong" sound when removing the device.

any ideas?

but i believe only a fresh install helps.
