Question : Problem: Best large tape drive --> Magazine fed?
|
|
I am currently running a Quantum LTO-2 tape drive (200/400). I run my tapes uncompressed. I bought it new and it has run like a champ for 2 years.
However, now I am getting to the point where I have more data than the tape can hold.
I'm looking for a new tape drive, and looking to spend from 3000 to 5000 dollars.
I've considered the newer 300/600 LTO drive or even a 400/800 LTO drive, as I have had good success with these type drives. They have been fast and reliable.
However, there is a new type of drive that I have been looking at. The particular model is the Quantum SuperLoader 3, one LTO-2HH tape drive, eight slots, LVD SCSI, although there are other manufacturers, like Sony and HP.
It seems that you load the tapes into a magazine or larger cartridge, kinda like a handgun, and it will take up to 8 tapes. Kinda like my idea of a tape library, but its easy to remove the cartridge and the tapes. Yes, it is quite large, but size isn't an issue for me right now. One advantage of this drive is that it will use my exisiting 200/400 LTO tapes of which I have a gazillion.
Has anyone used one of these yet? Are they reliable?
Also, if there are any other pertinant suggestions, I'll take them also.
Thanks alot

Quantum autoloaders are fine, HP OEM the Quantum ValueLoader as the HP 1/8 autoloader. Not had any complaints from customers using them. If your software can't cope with a random access library you can put them into sequential mode so they behave as if all the tapes in it are one big tape.
