I have an MSA2021 dual controller and was wondering if it is necessary to have redundant firer switches in the setup? both servers have 2 single channel HBAs. Could I not just connect the cluster nodes directly to each MSA controller (2 connections per server)?

If so, are there any downsides to this switchless config considering that there well never be a requirement to attach a third host to the MSA?

Yes, it supports direct host connect, there is a setting for that so you don't need switches at all. Under Fibre chael topology set ti to point to point. Connect each server to both controllers

The only downside is your reseller won't make any money selling you switches ;)
