Question : Problem: When formatting an NFTS drive, what does selecting different block(cluster) size do?

I have been wondering for years, if i select a 64k block size versus the default or 4kb, what is the difference? Are there particular performance consequences? Better for file storage? I have no idea, but would very much like to know!

Answer : Problem: When formatting an NFTS drive, what does selecting different block(cluster) size do?

Manzola, as i understand it, the block or cluster size describes the size of portions the hard drive will be seperated into. For example, if you set the cluster size to 64Kb and create a file that is 20Kb then the rest of the cluster will go wasted. There is no way to split clusters. For that reason NTFS clusters are commonly smaller and more efficient then older FAT file systems. Hope this helps?
