Question : Problem: Will IDE drive with XP OS slow down the performance of my NAS using SATAII and gbLAN?

I have four 250gb SATAII WD drives and will use RAID 5 to store various data. Should I put the OS on the RAID volume or what? The other option I have is to put the OS on a 40gb WD IDE. Will putting the OS on the IDE drive slow down data transfer to the RAID volumes? Don't forget this is network storage.

RAID5 is also not for performance, its more about integrity and redundancy of the data. Most  modern SATA system cannot even fully perform at 1.5 GB/s.
