Question : Problem: Chkdsk error messages references nonexistent files
|
|
Dell inspiron laptop. Windows XP Home edition. NTFS Chkdsk runs on bootup, does not complete, with the message "Index entries referencing file 54801 will not be validated because this file contains too many file names." [the number is something like that, and several similar messages appear] Checking Microsoft support site I find http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms828667.aspx Their recommended fix is to split file filename into smaller parts.
But file 54801 does not exist, as a filename at least. An idea how I can find and delete or clean up the offending entity?
Not screamingly urgent, as Laptop runs ok. But the HD dirty flag seems to remain set, so chkdsk runs on every bootup and never finishes, so I'm betting nothing gets properly cleaned up..

Answer : Problem: Chkdsk error messages references nonexistent files

Open Windows Explorer. Right Click on the Drive and Select Properties In that, select tools, Click on the Check Now Button for Error Checking and select all the options in the next window and click on Start.
If the Drive is in use it will tell you that it can schedule a Disk Check on the next restart. If the message appears, click Yes and it will scan and fix the Hard Drive automatically the next time. If it doesn't then it will take sometime to check and fix it then and there.
