Question : Problem: Realtek AC97 sound card not working.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo laptop (2.8ghz) 20gb memory and 256 ram (I think) that came with a realtek AC97 sound card (on board I presume) it has always worked fine up until a few days ago when all sound including system disappeared completely.
I have checked all the obvious Windows stuff like mute and enable and volume controls and just downloaded a more recent driver but nothing stirs.
The laptop has a couple of months warranty left but it was bought from a big chain outfit who will want to send it away for weeks at a time and it is essential for my work so I need a self-fix. Any ideas?
Don't know what series the sound card is - how do I find out?
