Question : Problem: Using a packet sniffer utility to determine if a network card is bad
My boss has asked me to figure out how to tell if a network card is going bad by using a general packet sniffer utility. I've tried some freeware utilities like Sniphere, Plastic Sniffer and SmartSniff which all seem to be decent programs.
No network cards have failed yet but I think he wants to get an idea of how the network cards are doing in the computers at the office where I work. Most of these computers are Dell computers with integrated network cards although we do have a few generic brand computers with 3com network cards.
When I use a packet sniffer utility to monitor the network communications, should I be able to tell from the packets it receives about any pending hardware failure? What signs should I look for that the network card is failing?
