Question : Problem: Soundcard dolby digital output

I am creating a media center PC that I am going to have connected to my tv and my home theater receiver.

I am buying a soundcard with optical and coaxial digital output.  My question is does the soundcard have to support dolby digital and dts in order for my receiver to play the dts or dolby.  My receiver supports both formats, does it matter if my soundcard does too?

Let me know
Thanks in advanced

Answer : Problem: Soundcard dolby digital output

As long as its digital out are supported, you can  use a audio decoder like AC3filter, to stream the audio through the card digital output.

Some "higher-end" card offer some features like real-time encoding of any audio format to Dolby Digital.
(AC3filter also mimicks that something similar, via software). While others can only encode specific streams or just serve as pass-through.

So, to answer your question, your card doesn't really "have" to support those features, as you can use it merely as a passthrough digital output device.
