Question : Problem: Backup strategy for 7 year retention period before restore
|
|
We need a high capacity (200Gb) and universal backup for a project where the restore could likely be in about 7 years time. When I say universal I mean that in 7 years the technology will still be around to restore it.
Personally I am all in favour of backing up to a USB hard drive and storing it for all this time but I dont know if there are any potential problems with this. The bearings/mechanisms in the HDD wont seize up with a lack of use will they?
Are there any pitfalls with this type of storage?
Thanks.

if you want to be sure you can restore the data, i would : -keep the technology and software needed (motherboards, disk or DVD drives, software needed) -then backup to disks - i would prefer ide or sata disks right now, NOT usb (because it adds an interface layer, that seems to go bad quite frequently) -to be sure about the data, keep it in 2 places at least, and rewrite the data once per year
