Can I reformat my ipod classic 80GB using a vista OS from disk mode (not using itunes, because it does not connect) and if so how do I do this successfully?

NO, you should format your IPod as FAT 32, that's the usual formating of an external HD, and that's how the IPod works.
If Windows can see the IPod as a removable HD, the select the format type as FAT 32 then ITunes should connect with it.
