Question : Problem: Can not use dyndns service

I changed to a Linksys RV042 router from a Linksys BEFSR41 router. The DDNS provided by dyndns.com was working just fine. I am NOT using VPN at this time. With both routers using Dyndns.com is an option setting in the router. When trying to connect to the host using the RV42 I get a dialog box asking for user and password for my dyndns account. When I enter the user and password and click OK nothing happens except the dialog box reappears with empty user and password fields. If I just close the dialog box I get the 401 Unauthorized error. When I re-installed the BEFSR41 I could NOW only get to some of the data on the host ( actually i-bays with SME Server). Requesting the other data resulted in the 401 Unauthorized error. But NO security dialog box. I have been back and forth between the RV42 and the BEFSR41 and tried every combination of things I can think of. I have done a lot web searching for answers. I found one users comment on NewEgg.com that the dyndns option in the RV43 router does not work. Linksys support sucks.

My Dyndns account is using the correct wan address. It appears to be using the new wan address if the modem is powered down and back up. I have also manually updated the address at the Dyndns.com site.

What is displaying the security dialog box? Router or host?

I have tried  the dyndns option in the router enabled and disabled.

The SME Server has a Dyndns client. I have also tried a Dyndns client on a PC. I found one message here recommending only having the dyndns client active on the router or a host.

thanks in advance

Answer : Problem: Can not use dyndns service

I finally found the self inflicted problem.

Dumb, dumb, dumb! I finally realized that I had forgot to forward port 80 to the web server on the RV42. Betweem using different PCs, clearing private data in the browsers, going back and forth between the RV42 and the BEFSR41, which was forwarding port 80 to the web server, I finally realized it was the RV42 displaying the security dialog and not the SME server. When the RV42 displayed the dialog box was not 100% straight forward and consistent. It seemed to happen sometimes when a second file was requested or the same file the second time. Still do not understand why the RV42 dialog was indicating that it was the SME server that was asking for the user and password. Well actually the dyndns host. The light bulb finally started going on when I used the logon for the RV42 and NOT the id's and passwords for the server or my dyndns.com account and the dialog box went away and no error 401 appeared. Of coarse all I had was a blank screen. I guess with all this poking around I've learned some things.
