Question : Problem: Hardware/Software flow control
|
|
My new modem works fine for downloads and for short uploads (up to about 10 k), but larger uploads are exceedingly slow (sometimes around 100 bytes/sec, in a 33k modem). This happens both in PPP connections and direct modem-to-modem transfers like Zmodem. It sounds to me like a flow control problem, and indeed, when I changed the flow control option in the control panel from hardware to software (XON/XOFF), uploads work OK, except they are still a little slow.
I would like to know: 1. What is the difference between hardware and software flow control? 2. How do I make my modem work correctly in hardware flow control, which I understand is better?

Strange that this is not the factory default (&F) setting. TI or Askey must have made a error somewhere in building the chip resp. the modem. Well, not all modem chips end up on PC cards.
I am curious : if you still have a manual of the modem, can you find these $F1 and &K0 command in it and tell us what the description is ? Apearantly &F1 restores defaults for PC cards... Maybe &F restores defaults for external modems.
Anyway, i'm glad your problem is solved.
