Answer : Problem: Help setting up VNC

Hi

What VNC are you using? I recomment TightVNC.
Download TightVNC from http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html ( choose tightvnc-1.3.9-setup.exe )
REMEMBER TO SET PASSWORD FOR THE VNC CONNECTION !!!!

Next you need to configure your router for port forwarding.
You probably only have one internet connection, that means in most situations that you only have one external IP.
On your intranet ( home LAN ) you have one intranet IP for each computer you have.
Write down your "ipconfig /all" for each and every computer you have at home.
Next you need to set up static ip for every computer. http://www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/residences//pdfs/HOWTO_static_IP.pdf <- Ignore the last step "9.putty..."
Open up port 5500 ( default vnc server... might be differ by VNCserver products ) in your firewalls.
When that's done make sure you can goto the internet on all computers.

Next you will want to open a port in your router and forward it to each computer on your intranet.
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm <- this webpage has very nice detailed steps for all kinds of routers.
You are intrested in forwarding port 5500 to first computer, and then increment the 5500 number by 1 for every computer on your network.

For example:
port 5500 -> 192.168.1.10
port 5501 -> 192.168.1.11
etc.

Goto http://www.myip.is and write down your IP address.
Call your Internet Service Provider and ask them if you have a Static or Dynamic IP. If you have Dynmaic ask them to pleace change it to a Static IP. ( note: they might assign you a new IP ).

When you connect home.
Write computer name as ip:port in the VNC client.
( example: 99.99.99.99:5500 )
It should ask for password
