Seems thats a common problem. First, can ITunes access the internet or is blocked by the firewall Are you using XP or Vista, I've read about issues with the "parental control" aplication in Vista that prevents ITunes to access the internet. Did you installed a new USB peripherial? could it be a conflict between USB drivers. Several aproaches to your problem are here http://www.experts-exchange.com/Apple/Hardware/iPODs/iPod/Q__23401012.html http://www.experts-exchange.com/Apple/Hardware/iPODs/iPod/Q_23423053.html
