Question : Problem: Performance difference in old Dell Dimension 4600 versus new Dell SC440
|

Hi, I replaced a customers Dell Dimension 4600 running Windows XP/Home with a new Dell SC440 PowerEdge Server also running Windows XP/Home. The customer says that the new computer is much slower than the old. Im wondering if the slowness is due to the new hardware vs. old or other factors.
Here are the specs: Dell 4600 CPU: 2.60 GHz L2 cache: 512 Bus Speed: 800 MHz Single core hyper threading. Memory: 1GB PC3200 Non-ECC DDR.
Dell PowerEdge SC440 server. CPU: Intel 2160 1.80 GHz L2 cache: 1MB Bus Speed: 800 MHz Dual Core non-hyper threading. Memory: 1GB PC5300 ECC DDR2 running at 667 MHz.
I dont know the equivalencies between a 2.60 GHz single core and a 1.8 GHz dual. I assumed the dual core would be faster because its dual core. If its a server running as a desktop would that matter?
The bios also says: 64bit technology: Intel EM64T Would applications run better/faster if I installed WIN/XP 64 bit rather than the 32bit version?
Thanks, Al

The dual core 1.8 runs circles around the 2.6 P4, there's no competition. Did you reinstall XP fresh on the SC440? Do you see any slowness on the SC440? I would not recommend the 64bit XP, You would need more ram to run the same apps in 64bit vs 32bit. There's no speed difference. 64bit allows the operating system to address more memory.
