Hi Sharath,
It would appear the Portserver is a serial-to-ethernet device, which allows you to connect devices with RS-232 serial ports to an Ethernet LAN network, where you can then access and control the devices remotely over ethernet.
RS-232 is a connection which you often have on some managed switches, routers and other networking devices. Also, some rackmount PCs and servers I think have an RS-232 serial input for connecting a terminal and viewing some information.
I suspect you have this hardware because it is converting a router, switch or something similar from a RS-232 port into an ethernet port, so you can interface with that device from anywhere on your LAN, rather than having to be right next to it like in most scenarios.
More information on a similar model can be found at http://www.digi.com/pdf/prd_ts_portserverts816.pdf, only difference is that one has more ports than your model.
