Operating with Windows XP, Computer is about 7 years old, it will not turn on, just start then shuts down where do I start looking for the problem or what do i replace first

If it starts, then shuts right down, I would look at the CPU (failed and overheated / overheated once and then failed). Try going into the BIOS. If it were a hard drive failure (doesn't sound like it), BIOS will load. If BIOS will not load, then it is more likely to be a motherboard/CPU failure.
