Question : Problem: Usage of multimode fiber cable : 50/125 vs. 62.5/125
|
|
Hello, I am trying fo find out the proper usage of multimode fiber cables of two different specs. One is 50/125 and the other is 62.5/125. How are they different and how can I decide which one to use for our devices. Mainly I have two different fiber devices : Ethernet switch and SAN switch. I seems like SAN (Dell/EMC clariion) prefers 50/125 and we normally use 62.5/125 for Ethernet (Cisco 3750 series). I want to clarify the difference and proper usage.
Thank you for your help.

62.5/125 fiber was designed with a core exactly half the size of the whole fiber, since it makes the fiber less sensitive to bending losses. The higher order modes in 50/125 fiber do not have as large a path variation as in the higher NA 62.5/125 fiber, reducing the modal dispersion. The smaller acceptance cone and smaller core diameter make it easier to make 50/125 fiber more precisely compensate for modal dispersion, yielding a fiber that is easier to build to higher bandwidth specifications. Existing 62.5/125 fiber cannot sufficiently meet the requirements of Gigabit Ethernet, and 50/125 fiber is bend-sensitive and has greater loss at connectors50/125-micron fiber optic cable performs better than 62.5/125-micron fiber optic cable. 50/125 fiber is not an absolute necessity for 1,000 Mbits/second Ethernet. Instead, 62.5/125 fiber is a much more viable option.
So everything is depending on what are you trying to achive.
