Question : Problem: Laptop sound device seems busted, what should I do?

Just recently, my laptop's sound just stops working, out of nowhere.
The hardware in Device Manager just disappeared. I didn't disable it or anything.

So if I try to play any sounds, I get this error:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

In fact, you can see everything I see simply by disabling your sound device (ex: "Realtek High Definition Audio" under "Sound, Video, and game controllers").  But remember, mines simply doesn't show up.

I thought it must be a virus, as McAffee keeps saying "Potentially Unwanted Program removed".

So I formatted the laptop with recovery discs to everything new.

And guess what? Still no audio device installed! It didn't do this in the past.

Even worse, the laptop model allows me to play CDs without turning the computer on, simply by pressing the play button on the chassis. Where it worked in the past, it can't play anything now.

THEREFORE, I suspect a hardware malfunction.

What should I do with such a good laptop? Calling Toshiba tech support will cost money ($35 now).

Thanks.

How about a USB sound device
