Question : Problem: Sun Storedge D1000 not see by probe-scsi-all on Sun E220R
|

Hello,
I am trying to hang a Storedge D1000 to a Sun E220R. I tried many tricks like changing how dip switches are set to assign scsi IDs differently and have the cabling accordingly. Currently I have it set 1 up // 2 down // 3 up // 4 down // 5 up Consequently I expect array 1 to have SCSI IDs starting at 8 and array 2 starting at 0. The disks are starting with 12 sec delay each separately (as expected). Scsi bus 0 is internal, scsi bus 1 is the external connector to the onboard bus. I have a dual SCSI PCI board that provides SCSI buses 2 and 3. One SCSI cable goes from SCSI bus 1 on the E220R to disk array 1 Another SCSI cable goes from SCSI bus 2 to array 2 Another SCSI cable goes from another more classical external disk to bus 3 (this last one is to test that the the PCI board works). All three are properly terminated.
In short:
Internal Bus 0 ----------- with 2 disks and a CD Onboard SCSI 1 ----------- Array A of Storedge D1000 ----------- TERMINATOR Dual SCSI PCI bus 2 -------- Array B of Storedge D1000 ----------- TERMINATOR Dual SCSI PCI bus 3 -------- Regular external disk ------------------- TERMINATOR
The probe-scsi-all commad (after proper reset-all) does not see the D1000. Output is: {0} ok probe-scsi-all /pci@1f,2000/pci@1/scsi@2,1 Target 3 Unit 0 Disk FUJITSU MAB3091S SUN9.0G2107
/pci@1f,2000/pci@1/scsi@2
/pci@1f,4000/scsi@3,1
/pci@1f,4000/scsi@3 Target 0 Unit 0 Disk FUJITSU MAJ3182M SUN18G 0804 Target 1 Unit 0 Disk FUJITSU MAN3184M SUN18G 1502 Target 6 Unit 0 Removable Read Only device TOSHIBA XM6201TASUN32XCD1103
{0} ok
Which shows the external disk on bus 3 (dual scsi in a PCI board) + the 3 internal devices (2 disks and a CD drive).
How can I make that Storedge D1000 be seen by the E220R? Thanks for any help.
Cheers.
Jac.

Take a real close look at the symbol for the scsi connector on the back.
Sun uses at least 3 different types of scsi connections, standard scsi, differential scsi, and fast wide scsi, and they are not interchangeable.
At the bottom of this page; http://scsifaq.paralan.com/scsifaqanswers4.html
You can see the symbols for various scsi type connectors. Take a real close look at the symbol on the scsi pci card and on the D1000, if they don't match, it won't work.
Some of the cards may just say "Fast Wide" or "Differential"
The D1000 uses a differential UltraSCSI connection.
Th onboard scsi on the E220r is a standard UltraSCSI, not differential, so the D1000 won't work with it.
Since bus 3 works with another disk, I would bet that that disk and the pci card is not differential.
To make it work you are going to have to find a dual differential UltraSCSI card, Model X6541A.
Good Luck!
