Question : Problem: PC without HardDisk but with Flash as HDD

I got 2 months holiday coming up and looking for a Fun and Crazy project to work on.
I want to build a PC without a traditional HDD but with a 2GB or 4GB Flash, 512MB Ram and maybe an AMD processor running on Linux (most likely Ubuntu) for my car.
Requirement: [1] Commercially available components [2] Economical hence a Flash based HDD is out of the question.
This question will be in a series of 4 questions.
Question 1 ------------ Before getting into the technical details, has anyone got any ideas and suggestions?

Hi, Im not sure where you can get them in america but they have available an IDE to Flash card adapter, you plug a flash card in to the small device and an ide cable to the main board and it acts just like a hard drive.
