Question : Problem: Change plug end from 5-20P to normal plug

Hi Experts.  I received a free UPS but the end is a 5-20P (see link for picture).  I need it to be a normal end.  Is there any problem getting a plug converter for something like a UPS?  Thanks.

Answer : Problem: Change plug end from 5-20P to normal plug

You can't just change the breaker and plug to 20A.  You need to:

- read the rating on the equipment
- count how many outlets are on that circuit.
- check how the circuit is wired

- read the rating on the equipment
A 20A circuit can't carry more than 16A load.  UPS is a constant load, and required de-rating of the circuit to 80%

- count how many outlets are on that circuit.
5 outlets = 900VA=7.5A@120V load on the circuit, before you add any equipment.
I had one circuit shared between two offices with 13 outlets = 2340VA = 19.5A on a 20A circuit, _before_ any equipment is plugged in.

- check how the circuit is wired
What gauge wire?  Should be 12AWG in residential.  10AWG in commercial.
Three-phase?  Shared neutral?  How is the neutral loaded?
