Question : Problem: Backing Up Text Messages

I have a PPC6700 and I am about to do an upgrade phones.
I was wondering if it is possible to backup the text messages that I need for confirmation of future activities.
I checked the Windows folder and there is a poutlock file - would anyone know what that does and if that is even possible.
